Tips for Skin Protection in Summer

Summer is here! Seize the opportunity to do outdoor sports with family and friends during weekends.  But why skin still got burnt after applying sunscreen before sports? Let us tell you more about UV-rays.

Both UVA and UVB penetrate the atmosphere and causing premature skin aging, eye damage (including cataracts), and skin cancers.  UVB rays reach the epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin; causing sunburnt.  UVA rays penetrate deeper inside than UVB, reaching the epidermis and the dermis, significantly causes skin-aging, photo-sensitization, photo-dermatoses. By damaging the cell’s DNA, UV radiation with long term exposure of skin could lead to skin cancer.  They also affect the immune system, reducing your ability to against diseases.

An SPF 15 sunscreen protect against 93% of the sun’s UVB rays; SPF 30, 97%; and SPF 50, 98%.  The Skin Foundation of US advises SPF 15 or higher are necessary for everyday protection.  For longer sun exposure, it recommends SPFs of 30 or higher. A broad spectrum sunscreen product is very important for sun protection.  We should also pay attention to the PA index (Protection Grade of UVA).  In general, PA++ can provide enough protection against UVA.

We should not just do skin protection in summer, in fact, we should apply sunscreen to block the UV-rays every day. Here are some tips for you:

  1. Over-exposure to the sun is a serious health threat.
  2. Avoid exposure under the sun from 11am-2pm, seek the shade outdoors.
  3. Cover up with clothing, broad-brimmed hat or UV-blocking sunglasses.
  4. Use a broad spectrum sunscreen every day, SPF15 & PA++ in general. Use a waterproof sunscreen with SPF 30 & PA+++ when doing outdoor activity.
  5. Re-apply frequently to maintain protection, especially after perspiring or swimming. Do not stay too long in the sun, even while using a sunscreen product.
  6. Keep babies and young children out of direct sunlight.
  7. Seek for professional advices or skin exam from doctors after sunburnt immediately.
